Rhythm of Life

Seasons roll on, unstoppable
Tides shift, without your help
The moon will rise, even out of sight
Powerful, immutable rhythms of life
Eyes on the horizon, always searching for hope

Read those words slowly. Let them soak into your brain. Roll them around on your tongue, tasting the truthful facts they preach.

The seasons roll on–spring, summer, fall, winter–time after time after time.

The tides shift, drifting in and out, without one lick of your help.

The moon rises, even though you can’t always see it.

It’s not up to you.

You can’t affect the cycle of seasons. You don’t control the tides. Your emotions don’t decide whether the moon rises or not. You are not. That. Powerful.

But God is.

He keeps these “powerful, immutable rhythms of life” going on and on and on. He “turns the earth through another day,” as the song “The Perfect Wisdom of Our God” says. He causes each beat of our hearts, each breath of our lungs, each blink of our eyes.

He’s in control.

So why do we worry? Why do we fret and stew and plan “in case of emergency” and question “what if”?

It doesn’t matter what you’re going through. Doesn’t matter how you feel. Doesn’t matter when it is, how long it’s lasted. He’s got this; and He’s got you.

I don’t know about y’all, but I think sometimes we–I–feel like life should stop when I’m not doing well. Like, I’ve had a bad day, or I just went to a funeral, or my faith is struggling right now. . . How dare others be smiling and having a good time? How can the sun keep shining or the birds continue singing? Don’t they know my life–my entire world–is a mess?

But maybe God planned it that way. Maybe it’s to show us we’re not that important. I mean, yes, He loves us and cares about us and hurts when we hurt, and all that. But we’re not that important; the world doesn’t revolve around us. So life goes on.

I find that encouraging. If everything around me conformed to my feelings and thoughts, well, it’d probably be all over the place: sunshine and flowers and butterflies and dancing hither-and-yon one day, and thunderstorms and darkness and graves and frozen-in-place the next.
Instead, life goes on. The sun rises in the east and sets in the west. The moon follows her course. The seasons rotate through. The tides flow in and out. Time and again, over and over. Steady. Faithful.

Our God is like that. Steady. Unchanging. Faithful. Not depending on our feelings or opinions or how much time we spent reading His Word and praying today. He does what He does, what is in His will and plan.

He’s in control. So breathe; relax; trust.

And watch the rhythm of life continue.
